Good Morning, fellow bloggers! I'm here with new determination to get writing! The snow is melting, the birds are chirping, ...now if the city can just find the manhole cover they lost while scraping the ice on my street, life will be just about back to normal!
The comments have been great...thanks especially to the Social Work Fairy for such a thoughtful, and insightful, essay...and I was struck - while re-reading this morning - by E2's comment about T3 - which seems to forecast the recent patient death there.
Out here, in the world of community mental health, things don't feel as desperately bleak and hostile as they seem to be there in the Enchanted Castle. Partly, no doubt, it's because we aren't locked in together...but there are other factors, too. Big on my list is that I'm allowed to actually do something to improve the lives on my caseload...I'm encouraged to act, instead of encouraged to shut up and check the little boxes. Ahhhh!! what a relief.
...a side note here - I suspect that being allowed to "act" at work, makes it less necessary to "act" by blogging....thus these long gaps in essay writing....
And that's why, Social Work Fairy, I think you underestimate the effect Administration and/or Leadership has on an institution....Leadership creates the atmosphere - the "attitude" - by valuing certain qualities in the workplace. It is certainly possible to create an atmosphere where action is valued, for example. If personal motivation, independent and creative thinking, effective interpersonal skills, etc. were cherished, reinforced, appreciated...you'd have an entirely different hospital there.
I think that's why Hickenlooper, bless his heart, is doing so well. He's got a similar, complex of factors - and regulations - True, he's not locked up with his co-workers, and that does count for something. But he's action oriented, creative, and honest...he doesn't have to do it all, he just has to let others do it...be able to make sound judgements about what helps and what hurts an effort....have some notion of what the "goal" is.
The other important difference between working in the Enchanted Castle and working in the community, is the "fun at work" factor. When I was there (at the Castle), I had the impression that "fun at work" meant "patient neglect" somehow. Some people seemed to be having fun only if they were ngelecting patients - and others seemed to be viewed as neglecting work if they were having fun with the patients.
Out here in the community, we have more fun - it isn't frowned upon as much...on Friday, for example, the center had its annual Christmas party. (Apparently, nobody had time at Christmas.) We went - on the light rail - to the Wynncoop Brewery (there's that Hickenlooper, again). We had lunch, played a little pool, saw an improv comedy show. Went home at 3.
Mandatory attendance. "Just Go!" was the Administrative message. "Have fun!"
And I agree with the SWF about the effect of the entire "social" attitude on the mentally ill - or other dependent members of society. I was complaining to an attorney, (my "consumer" was consulting her to make an appeal on denial of benefits) , that the Social Security office was difficult to communicate with. She said, "You know why that is, don't you?" "No, tell me" I rejoined. She said, "Since the start of the war, the Social Security office has been on a hiring freeze. As time goes by, there are fewer and fewer people to do more and more work. The money is going to the war. It'll only get worse."
Today in the paper, there was an article saying that the government intends to spend - is required to spend - $2.9 million dollars to implement regulations that will save $300,000 for Medicaid....and then there's the president's Medicaid/Medicare budget for this year.....
I saw something last week in the paper about how welfare roles had dropped by some good percentage or other, indicating that more people have gotten jobs to support themselves. Ha! nonsense...there's just that many more poor people out there with nuthin' - nuthin at all!
I just think that's not good for society...and I think Leadership has a lot to do with it.

I agree with some aspects of the Social Worker's view. But I know the private sector and agree with Gad it is fun. It has to be fun, because people move on if not; to another job that is. A job should not create bitter, miserable people, but it is very profound here. I would like to see more people being hired, not giving retirees priority in rehiring. The hospital needs a new face and it cannot have it with continued use of those that have retired who do not have any new ideas. I honestly believe you need to go try something new in your life and stop hanging out here talking about the "good ole days". You are taking positions of those that are hungry and fresh within the field could fill, and are limiting new ideas and progression of this hospital. I am not picking on the older crowd for age, but picking on those that are ineffective and have been so for the last 10 years, just milking the system and waisting clients' time. There are others that are really great, but some that are bitter because they have never advanced(who's fault is that?). As far as Keithie is concerned throw that bum out; he is honestly an idiot and replace him competent director that could keep his eyes off the ladies" panty lines for a minute and improvee hospital attitude and care. Honestly have any of ever spoke to him? If not considr yourself blessed. I've held better conversation with Teddy Ruxpin when I was a child. I am not a lazy ass nurse(as one blogger said), I have met many, but most of those were the idiots that were hired were fired(or about to be), from other hospitals.
I very much respect nurses, clinicians and social workers that are able to do their job. But many are past that point not because of age, but lack of motivation, ambition and limiting knowledge by not learning new techniques since Nixon was President. You are also part of the problem and a hindrance on the growth of modern psychological movement in most hospitals today. I ask you reevaluate your life expectations and move your ass on to better horizons. Please slide your retirement paperwork under the director's door(he may be an idiot, but he can sign his name or a "X" at the very least).
To those incompetent managers(not all, but a majority), you hire these idiots, if they were an idiot on another unit. Do you think they would magically be cured on a transfer to yours? DId you think adding another lazy ass person to the equation would improve morale and job performance? Could we please get a Borderline personality questionare/testing prior to hiring of people. I should not see an employee's face next borderline personality example in the DSM that I work with. I may not be the smartest, but I would bet I could do a better job with "my eyes closed"(which I think is a secret policy of this hospital anyway).
"I'm the cutest"
"Like my shoes"
"I went to this bar"
"He was fifteen years younger",
"Is he single?"
"I hope so"
"Even if he's not, I"ll make him"
"He said he would call me".,
"I think he joined the circus"
This is the average dialogue of the Nurse's station(Nurse manager included). Hell, they might be asking the client advice on a relationships. Or my favorite letting the client know all their diagnosis and medications.
The moral of the story don't mix Vodka, diet pills, Zoloft and come to work.
To those I have offended you do so to me daily with your worthless conversation and minimal knowledge or care for the client. We actually now are supposed to provide patient with actual knowledge beyond discussing politics and "Nam". Which you probably were never part of, since you couldn't have been pryed off your ass from the chair in the milieu with a forklift. For you to ever to be involved in anything of importance, besides getting a paycheck. Cheers
I wish people would edit their editorials better, the misuse of the Language is just soooo offensive, besides undermining the entire message,it is so adolescent. What about no positions, just transformation.............any transformative information or experiences or insights or poetry or haiku.......................??
O.K........What are the rules for a haiku?
a poem
Like me,I'm cute
do you like my shoes?
you're so young, you make me mute
The circus,you say
fifteen,laid and single
think I'll hang out my shingle
Gee..........This is FUN.............
"Hell, they might be asking the client advice on a relationships. Or my favorite letting the client know all their diagnosis and medications."
Just curious-
Do you mean that we shouldn't be letting the clients know their diagnoses and teach them about their medications?
If you took more than a year of psychology you would know that is boundary issues with a client(Since 1998). If all you can worry about is editing a message then you obviously have nothing to say yourself. What is offensive is those who pretend to be educated yet bring nothing to the table, but a chair to sit in. That is what is truly offensive, as far English grammar goes last time I checked this is a blog not a English 101.
Why don't you discuss a solution besides a critique of word structure.
Honestly, discussing such boundary issues within any modern facility would probably get you talked to. It's unprofessional and any good therapist would know that.
I do not blame those who work here it comes down to not keeping staff trained and update on new techniques and general psychology updates.
Reading message, it is correct to discuss diagnosis and medication of the clients with them. Secondly, you must be careful and make sure that you have the knowledge or scope to do this however.
This is a facility that will "burn" those they do not like doing the same exact thing another staff does. Anyone who has worked here longer than 6 months would know that and acknowledge it.
I believe that there is a lot of unequal treatment here. What I don't understand is why so many are lazy, but are afraid when someone decides to fight ineffective management. You here things like "You'll lose your job". Yeah right, what will happen is someone will stop talking to you(which might be for the best if you can't stand them).
I just think treatment of staff is unequal and that why I do not invest to much time here. Besides you cannot move up because people don't retire or move on. In the real world you get a Bachelors in Psychology and work for a facility then move on. However, here a lot do not finish the first degree and stay forever. There is no incentive to become a therapist and seek out your way in life.
Some do get their graduate degrees and I see them smiling as they get ready to take on the world(there all not young turks either).
We can argue that we are professionals, but the truth is were not. WE ARE DIRECT CARE STAFF! We don't manage anything, putting out towels, feeding clients or minimal groups on hygiene do not qualify for that title. Hell! I guess the janitors are professionals then(I should have never went to school). Yes management says that we are professionals. Do you think management want you to go to school, besides for anything but a "pill pusher". No, they know you would realize your value outside of here and see this place as what it is a sh#tty little hospital with no real future.
No disrespect to other nurses, but it is truth we are treated like a LPN in a nursing home, no real responsibility(unless meds), are advice is disregarded and they have this blind belief that there is not a shortage of nurses. I guess we are not in demand and need to put up with this for 25$ an hour with ten years of experience(laughing).
If you don't believe most of your supervisors are fools, then it is you thats being fooled.
How do they talk to you when they are mad?
Do they play childish games when you go against them(like asking about policies)?
Do they alter your schedule?
How about overtime, are you cut out of it when they are mad?
It's childish games that make me not respect them. They would have been fired a long time ago anywhere else. All it would take is a 60% nurses going to HR on them or lossing the nurses.
Why don't more employees file grievances when disrespected by those in charge.
Is staff scared of management, are we adults here and demand to be talked to as such. Could I look my kids in the eye and know in my heart that I allowed another adult to treat me lesser. If I cannot stand up for myself, regardless of excuses I tell myself then I am no better than a slave or indentured servant.
What are you?
Did you allow a supervisor to "cuss" at you, ignore you or bully you.
There are people on the corner of Colfax that use that excuse.
I am a professional, but I also do not work here that much. I say what is on my mind and if they don't like it then prove me wrong. I sleep good at night and can look my kids in the eye every morning. Because I carry myself as an adult and understand my value in this world and it is much more than the FOrt. It might be called self-esteem( I can't remember though)
A professional does not allow that to happen to them and sleep well. A child will cry then sleep like a baby(then deal with all over again in same exact way).
Professions are at least to a degree self-regulating, in that they control the training and evaluation processes that admit new persons to the field, and in judging whether the work done by their members is up to standard. This differs from other kinds of work where regulation (if considered necessary) is imposed by the state, and official quality standards are often lacking. Professions have some historical links to Guilds in this regard.
Professionals usually have autonomy in the workplace - they are expected to utilize their independent judgment and professional ethics in carrying out their responsibilities. This holds true even if they are employees instead of working on their own. Typically a professional provides a service in exchange for payment in accordance with established protocols for licensing, ethics, procedures, standards of service and training/certification.
In narrow usage, not all expertise is considered a profession.
I meant knowing all the staff's disgnosis. Sorry
Those who do not "ruffle any feathers" waiting on Pera(look at yourself in the mirror).
Do you feel good? Are you proud? Will you smile when get that paycheck and know you got "walked over" for 20 years for it.
Will you stand up on your principles like a man or woman?
If you feel people are mistreating you will you quit or become a "Lapdog".
There is very little difference between a coward and quitter.
If you know you did your best went through channels that is different. People like those(with self-esteem) usually prosper in life. Those who do not, are stuck in "dead-end" jobs, getting false promotions where they spend more time at work, with little change in pay. That is a fool!
Do you talk "under your breath" or tell the supervisor the issue in a professional way.
I pose these questions because I care for you that invest your time here. I want you to look at what it means to be a healthy functioning adult. I want you to realize your potential and what it means to be a good role model to patients and our own children. We can talk on the board(good to vent), but what are we doing at work that justify us holding the belief that we are professionals. You can carry a briefcase and be called a therapist, but that does not make you a professional if you are scared to make a clinical decision on your patient. Because you might be yelled out(which no one has the right to do anyway). Then your neither a man or a woman, and do not deserve respect.
See we also created this problem of morale by weakness of our own character. We allowed the few to stand alone with quite reassurance, but little in the way of proactive help. I would put myself in the same category, but I stood up for myself since I came here and was rewarded with a better job somewhere else(still here barely).
So yes I accuse those of little effort in standing up and being a Man or a Woman. It's called balls! No matter if natural born or a way of thinking many lack them.
" Let me shut up, they might take my Pera away"
If you believe that you honestly are a certified idiot in the kindest regards of the term. Therefore, do not deserve retirement or to be classified as an Adult.Secondly, you are just a human that is old enough by law to hold a job.
If you are in you 30's & 40's have you thought of furthering education or are satisfied with handing out towels and waiting on retirement.
What would happen if this place closed, would you be prepared, education wise, experience(beyond state) and self-esteem to get a good job. What steps have you taken to become a viability in the workforce. Many of you that are not nurses will have trouble in the real world finding jobs, because of lack of education, experience or stuck in outdated psychology models of treatment.
Do you believe they pay clinicians the amounts they get here in the real world. No! It's a "stepping stone" on the way to a masters for modern psychology students.
I want to see us getting more education(those who do not have masters). I want to see those with masters get out in the world and make an impact(if not social workers or therapists working in title).
I want to see nurses demand to be treated as such. We as nurses are professionals and should be treated as such. No matter if 2 or 4 year degree, some of us allow ourselves to be treated as CNAs. If you cannot carry yourself as a nurse, you have no right to call yourself one.
Stand up for each other. I have never worked a place where the men whine more than women and run quicker than them from standing on principles. If this was a "monster movie" and we were being chased by a monster. You would probably "trip me" to save yourself from the monster. I do not know what to say, do some "push ups" and quit crying. Be part of the solution instead of a sideline cheerleader while throwing us ladies to the wolves.
Not all, but a lot of you have low Testerone levels or something.
Women quit fighting amongst ourselves learn how to work together(we tell our kids this). If you have the lone Borderline on your unit, quit kissing their butts and get them heading towards the door. They can destroy staff morale quicker than a pay cut.
The same if a team leader/supervisor if not a good one start filing grievances. Admin will take notice especially if majority of staff are voicing disatisfaction in their job performance. Secondly, in voicing displeasure I do not mean private talk with HR, but formal paperwork. Conversations can be denied, but legally binding paperwork cannot(make sure you make a copy.
If a supervisor yells at you, correct them promptly. The possibilty of it happening again will be unlikely. They are also testing you to see if you are a "coward" or an adult. We all know what verbal abuse is and what happens if goes unchecked in any relationship(it get worse).
Start taking care of each other and get those personality disorders heading out the door. We make them feel welcome when we do nothing, let them run the units, or undercut our decision making when we do not confront the behaviours. You let one cancer fester and it becomes a larger problem. We need to the "Chemo" to these a$sholes honestly.
Take a stand or live on you knees it your choice and it's your HOSPITAL.
To the person checking grammar. How about you provide input beyond pretending to be educated. Obviously you are not by your empty reply and lack of input into the problem. You are probably part of the problem and one of the "leeches" the taxpayers need to know about. Cheers
People who cannot invent and reinvent themselves must be content with borrowed postures, secondhand ideas, fitting in instead of standing out.

A letter that was emailed to the Governor.
We could possibly save money at Fort Logan (CMIFL), by elimination of team leader position on the eight units. We have two supervisors on each unit that house around 20-24 patients. This is not how modern hospitals set up units for effective use of budget. Secondly, the team leaders make between 7000 to 8000$ per month each. With cutting of these positions, insurance and retirement the state would save a million dollars. Thirdly, most hospital unit are managed by a head nurse, however here many nurses are supervised by a employee that is not qualified for the position. My belief is this mismanagement of taxpayer funds and would be a simple way of saving money. With consideration given to employees that’s positions are eliminated at other positions. We cannot truly believe that a team leader of a small unit should make more (or equal) to that of a principal, PHd, or Psychiatrist . Kind sir, I believe you will make the cuts in correct parts of the hospital and strengthen others. The nurses are very underpaid (nurse 1 & 2), while others make more than Directors of Nursing in other hospitals. I believe this hospital is needed in this community, but without budget control we will always be "on the chopping block". I ask for your help in regards to allowing Fort Logan to be a leader in the field of Psychology and not a "warehouse" that we have become in the last 7 years.
Thank you for your time.
We must all do our part if we want change.
irMan,Oh Man.......I just read comments from the snow shoveler section........people are really Mad around here.......ever wonder just what creates these hornets nests........actually,people say it really isnt any different anywhere else....do human beings just have a .......what.........is it that repetition compulsion thing where people just endlessly act out their unresolved family dramas on the present environment without ever having any insight about what they are doing. Isnt anyone interested in some introspection and finding out whats going on with themselves. And what is all this horrific attacking about??? Has the job turned us into some sort of archaic primative attack beast. Who best to deal with and heal your own wounded angry hearts but yourself. Still looking for mommy and daddy I guess. What would be so wrong with telling the truth to ourselves about where we are in our lives and taking some responsibility for our health, souls, minds, bodies, goals, desires. I am no goody two shoes.....but Im not blind, deaf and dumb either..........the world has everything in it.........its a big place.....and everywhere you go there are the same types of people from central casting............every character ....and its the same here........why would you expect anything different. We are adults.......we make choices.......we see injustice all the time in the world.....you wanna work for justice......pick a worthy cause and do it........you arent going to do it in a State System.....unless you are addicted to failure or gripeing all the time. Take responsibility for your small part,do your job with some integrety and careing.....that is your reward......you want more money....go sell real estate or sell drugs.........dont delude yourself...........And for God's Sake, stop attacking another human being in the same oppressive system you are in. Being an administrator is a Bitch............so get paid more for everyone to hate you.......you want that job......Leave people alone......its an inadequate system for all of us for gods sake........it isnt a picnic.........O.K.........Dont turn yourself inside out and into someone who you arent........for the small pleasure of slamming someone else.....shut up and work on your own issues, maybe then we could rise to the occasion and create something better. Go back to school and get an education,do something productive with your angry energy,or feel impotent for the rest of your life, its your choice.I for one am sick of it. Its like watching a brutal slaughter everyday, stupid and meaningless. Make meaning, create meaning, construct, transform, redesign yourself........but dont sit around pissing on everyone else..............The END

Anonymous, your a troll, checking grammar give some insight into the issues. Come on! Your how old and that is very childish. Empty replies from an empty mind. Cheers
All I can hope for is that this hospital will close. Good riddance! Will use my nice little Pera for a down payment on a nice car when I leave in about 6 or 7 months. It was fun, not really. I lost more brain cells working here than all my teenage years with marijuana. I'm sorry had to laugh at that one. This place rates high on the lame meter.
It is You're a Troll, not "your a Troll"...........Maybe try Rap next time............
Did'nt someone say Hope isn"t a strategy............
What was that troll, go teach your cats(you probably don't have a husband) how to read and speak properly. Since your so smart lets compare resumes "YOUR" probably stuck here. But I understand you have cats to feed and an apartment to pay for. Later Gator!
Heres A rap for your.
You AIN'T got no man.
You need a Tan.
And your fat from all the Spam.
Your apartment is a "rat trap"
Your car is crap.
Your clothes are cheap.
Get a clue.
and maybe a husband too.
Cheers
