To reiterate what a couple of bloggers have sent in already, there IS a meeting in the auditorium on April 16 at 8 a.m, 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. Please plan on attending one of the meetings if you want to see some change in this place. You should also come with agenda items that you want to see addressed.
Two that I can think of right off the top are staff and patient safety on the units due to decreased ratio of staff to patient. It's getting worse instead of better. Also I think we need to address where the HMG could do a little trimming on their level. So far all I've seen are cut backs on the line staff. Do we really need that many administrators?
If you have any questions at all please bring them to the meetings and we've been reassured that they will be answered if possible. Now is our chance to act to help get this place back to where it once was and be as prosperous as it once was. We need to quit living from one fiscal year to the next and hope that we make it. Now is the time for the line staff to take action and we have no one to blame but ourselves if we don't!

Thank you so much for your positive call to action! Yes, we have only ourselves to blame now if we sit back and do nothing. We have the collective power to make changes in our working conditions, and to improve the care we give our patients.
Again, yes! Why doesn't HMG take on some of the "sacrifice" that the line staff has to endure? Where are they when there are not enough staff to safely run the units? This institution is top-heavy, and would probably benefit from some judicious culling in the management sector.
Personally, I would start with the Team Leader positions. What do these people DO? (besides toady up to the Administration, fail to support front line staff and interfere with their ability to work efficiently?) Certainly the units could be better run by the Nurse Managers; the Nurse Managers are far more in touch with the front line staff and the patients.
That said, if you are unhappy about the way things are going at the Fort, if you have been submitting posts to this blog complaining about the way things are being handled, make a point to be at the Union meeting on April 16. It's time now to stop complaining and take ACTION!
The nurses at Kaiser have a union they get what they want and they are the leaders in the city for salery...Get smart go for a Union.. at least you won't get fired for no good reason....
I understand how tired everyone is of all the crap here. Why do so many stay here? Unless you have more 5 years in here or over the age of 45 (without a 401k or 403) you should not really put to much loyalty into a decrepit, old, outdated and archaic hospital.
Many of us sell ourselves short, personally limit the marketability of our skills. If under the age of 40 and this is all you know. get an education (if not completed yet), and find a job that fit your personal and professional needs.
People will say that the economy and job market is bad. Well it is if you have a limited education, no specific area of documentated knowledge or a really bare resume. Those that fall in the knowledge worker fields have companies beating down their door. Do most of these type employees have unions? No! Why you ask? Because their skills are in demand and they are paid for what they know or they go somewhere else. We can complain about a dead end, go nowhere, dysfunctional job or we can take the steps to empower ourselves and break the chains of subservant direct care employees tossed peanuts whenever the cagemaster deems it good for us.
Why am I here? Because it is a broke down, dysfunctional, old hospital that is just looking for bodies (not professionals) to fill job slots. Therefore, get what you can and get the hell out of here before you become shackled to an outdated hospital.
We don't need a union.
I/You need to look at our goals, views of success, and what we want out of a company.
If a company does not fit our personal model of work then find one that satifies our intellectual as well financial needs.
Just a thought.
Ps,
Nurses, of you have a personality don't sell yourself short.
I understand those that are close to retirement, but younger employees. NEWSFLASH! Companies do not care about you, the days of unions of a real tool of change are gone. They were viable when only 3% of the population held a Bachelors Degree (1960's), and have dwindled as employees became more educated and we moved from a nation of manufactoring to more of a service industry (Like Great Britain).
Companies pay those that have something to offer. I for one want to part of those that have something to offer and get paid.
What about you?
Any one have a review of the union meetings?????
First we are upset we don't have enough staff, now we are upset we have HSS people. Then we are upset we don't get to take vacation on holidays and then we are upset because we ate up 7% of our budget on that weekend alone...........we all have the power to enjoy our jobs and quit complaining. Upper administration cannot "make" us feel bad we do it to ourselves with the poison of negativity. If you hate it here so much...you hae a choice to leave so those of us who actually enjoy making a difference in the clients we treat can do just that. Negativity is contagious and serves no purpose.
