Here's to the line staff for taking us through the "budget crunch". The fiscal year is upon us and let's hope that things change once it passes. For it is not only the line staff that have had to endure and cinch up the drawstrings, it is the patients too who have had to suffer because of the lack of funding.
I'm talking about lack of supplies that we use to help make the patients comfortable. I find it hard to believe that we can afford to pay HSS people to work here, but can't afford to buy Kleenex etc. etc.
And about those HSS people. I appreciate them being able to be there and they really do help us out in a time of need. But weren't we told that there would be no pool people to help out and we'd have to pull from our own resources to cover shifts?
I for one am tired of HMG talking out of both sides of their mouths. Why can't they be up front and honest with us. It would sure go a long way to closing the gap between Line Staff and HMG. I have yet to see an HMG person working on a unit to help fill a need. Like we were told they would do.
Hopefully after the 1st things will get back to "normal", whatever that is. I hope to God that they don't keep us where we are and continue to burn out the entire Line Staff body. We need a break here folks. Something has to give and I think the Line Staff have done their share of giving lately.

The truth, you can't handle the truth! You just do your job and let us make the hard decisions. Let's move patients around to take care of hospital needs and not give a crap about patients treatment needs or saftey. Who's going to advocate for them? Let's keep patients crammed onto units and short the staffing. If something bad happens we'll be insulated and they'll take the blame. There are the rules written down and the unwritten expectations that line staff are expected to follow. When something happens which set will be enforced? And who will be held accountable?
You notice that there has not been a shift supervisor for certain shifts lately? How about a supervisor losing their overpaid job because of out of whack spending on their unit that hurt all of us? Who cares about HMG they are not leaders and never have been so quit expecting anything from them, but the normal “lip service” , that’s if they even speak to you. So no overtime will continue after July (I am hearing), besides the staff that have some years under their belt still make good money but did you know that all new hires only start at around 15$ per hour regardless of experience or education? Hmmm, so you think that you will keep new people around, overworking them, assaults, fighting the milk drinking rats (not HMG either), working in a dilapidated hospital crappy scheduling, weak jcaho rule breaking management, shetty health benefits, and gas on the rise? Good luck! Hey we have money to repave the parking lot. However we can’t paint, get new furniture and actually makes this shelter look like a hospital instead of a giant thrift store full of junk furniture, allergy inducing dirty air filters, mold, but hey look on the bright side the piss stained floors always shine sooooo perty.
So enjoy your floors and the pleasant smell of urine and shet that permeate the air. Ahhh the air around here really gets your heart a pumping and probably your nose a sneezing.
Here is the real kicker the use of client care aides 2 at 11.68 per hour x 168hours per month =1962$ -400 (Kaiser Healthcare family=1562-Pera-taxes about 1100 to 1200$ per month take home pay. HMG are you truly that stupid that you would believe that a CNA with gas and commodities on the rise, likely supporting a family will stick around here when everyone else here makes decent money and they would still qualify for welfare. So you would hire people that you know would likely turn down health insurance because of cost, then I hope are not religious people because you have a hot seat waiting for you knowingly putting others in financial difficulty to save some pennies. Instead of firing the incompetent managers, that use favoritism, limited leadership ability, lip service and general incompetence. What does HMG do to managers that waist money? Nothing, but give them transfers to other jobs and allow them to keep the same pay and we get to work for comp time and watch sick calls go through the roof.
We need to start reporting them to the various agencies every time they break a rule, especially if they continue shady practices after July 1st.

In years past, the hospital would not frown on seclusion hours. It made sense back then because people frowned on assaults. Chuck the Utah model. Its a joke without the manpower.Since the hospital haphazardly adopted the Utah state hospital model, things have gone downhill. With administration frowning now on seclusions and"coddling" rough patients to keep them from assaulting which mind you does not work, chaos rules the madhouse. So does the almighty dollar. Admin does not care about the danger levels on the units folks. Treatment is simple- if a patient keeps assaulting, seclude him or her. Its stupid to change treatment expectations when there is no progress with the patient. Sorry folks, the job is not rocket science. Either the heads of the madhouse are very, very stupid, or they are deliberatly making life hard on the units. Again, in m y opinion, only spreadsheets and seclusion hours are all admin cares about. AND INTERROGATE YOU THEY WILL OVER WHY SUCH AND SUCH WAS SECLUDED. SO YOU ALL BEST BE READY TO DEFEND YOUR PROFESSIONALISM TO THE DOCTORS.fOR IT IS AN ABUSIVE CULTURE AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE UNTIL PRIORITIES,PEOPLE, AND POSITIONS CHANGE! The question is, how do the line staff change things with no no representation?Oh thats right as the t-5 doc says, "the line staff are here to be hit." I do not know about you, but that statement does not represent me. All that sad and pathetic statement does is sum the total dysfunction of this zoo!
Whatever happened to the HMG filling in as needed for holes in the scheduling during this end of the fiscal year crunch aka "Together We Can Do It" Plan ?Maybe it's a good thing that they haven't since they might get in the way.Leave it to the nursing students who've been dumped on the units (that is to say ,their instructors do not stay to "instruct") to do that.
I just don't understand how no doubt pricey HSS staff can be afforded;did the HMG folks find it that revolting to work on the units that money for these HSS folks was suddenly unearthed ? The HSS staff have been excellent overall I must say, hard working and pleasant.
Speaking of "revolting",we have to give credit to the Dietary Services for doing their share "to reduce food costs" AEB corn dogs and mac and cheese up the wazoo.Maybe this is part of the whole aversion therapy thing that doesn't work since people keep coming back....
Has anyone s een how many shifts have not been filled the first week of July? Wow and they think people will volunteer for “compensation” time to drive out here, using gas and the possibility of getting scammed out of comp days by shady administration. What planet are you on HMG or better yet what herbs and spices are you smoking? We are going to have a serious incident if the short staffing continues to happen and of course line staff will be to blame.
Why would they not let staff do overtime, but are willing to pay HSS 30$ an hour to use their Mental Health Workers? Why are we all suffering because one Clinician made more than any other state employee? If it was illegal, favoritism or some type of fraud after the investigation is complete then fire the person and demote/fire the supervisor. Do not make us all suffer, we all like overtime, but most of us have lives, activities outside of work so that we will not be attempting to live here or die here from overworking. I have also heard however that this person is very hard to work with on their home team and management has been aware of the problems/complaints against this individual through years. In addition, that many staff members have left or retired because the individual is allowed to basically run the unit, alter scheduling, and the former supervisor was very ineffective in dealing with the employee. I have heard that this unit that the job is very laidback, but is very toxic environment. It seems weird that their Team Leader retired right before the investigation began? Hmmmm sounds like there might some truth to the rumors of fraud and mismanagement, but hey thanks we all get to suffer for a supervisor’s incompetence, an employee that could not manage a work/life balance and hospital management not providing oversight to these units to make sure it was functioning correctly before everything hit the fan.
PS, Nothing wrong with working hard, but gosh takes some time and enjoy life. That is the saddest part of the story, nothing in life is guaranteed and we only have a short time on this earth. Have a wonderful summer, bring back some good vacation stories, garden successes, pets, kids and hobbies, but just make sure you have fun.
I have total contempt and utter obscenities and curses upon those who manage this unit on how they have created an environment devoid of reality based treatment for clients and an unsafe work environment for their staff members. The promotion and transfer of certain nurses with more personality issues than Robin Williams after 30 “Red Bull” energy drinks. Hey, let me be first to congratulate HMG for allowing the creation of one of the most dysfunctional unit management teams in years and transferring the mad hatter away from us (thank you). I will be the first to volunteer on that assault unit for comp time. NOT! Eat crow this summer HMG.
I was looking for the numbers to call to report concerns to JCAHO and CMS. Could someone please post them again?
Thanks.
Let the games begin. Now that the hiring freeze is over the second floor is posturing to get their cronies in line. Let's not get compenent staff on the units but good old buddies and yes-man. You won't challange the emperor who has no clothes. (But he got some shiny shoes)
In reference to the report of the abuse hotline number for patient reporting. It is the STAFF getting abused. I continue to be proud of the work that I do as well as that of most of my coworkers. In my experience the "line staff" are a dedicated bunch especially now. It's very difficult to tolerate the bullshit from management and continue to meet the needs of the patients. Only the loud bullies are getting attention AND what is now passing for treatment. The quiet schizophrenic is lost in the hours consumed trying to LOW LEVEL the often sociopathic client that does respond to control of the milieu ie SECLUSION. Take back control.
The person you are talking about on the unit that is being investigated have heard that this person is not nice either to clients or staff on the unit, basically not a nice person.....Dont know her bosses really so not sure...
Anyone know if they are allowing overtime yet? I'm not trying to make six figures, but have some projects I want to do just curious before getting a 2nd gig..
Let us all hope the "Union" makes a difference, I really believe they will.
Happy Fourth!

I found a link to a Utah State Hospital story about unsafe working conditions. Would paste, but really long.

hmmmm.....looks like they are closing oregon state hopspital, where Cuckoos Nest was filmed. many reasons are given- a resting place for patients who died in the 1800's to the 1950's was found. Also they closed the hospital due to staff abuse to children, stomach like illnesses?? becoming too commmon and for having too many patient to patient assaults. Oh! Also b/c of ceiling damamge and other building damage is a hazard. Last I saw if the big bad wolf came to the old fort, and he huffed and puffed, the fort would shatter! Real eye operning article. It is on 9news.com right now. Patient to patient assaults tto high? Wonder if this is an issue for the fort. I wonder what constitutes high assault rates to those who closed it down. My question is-how did that hospital get the people it needed to do what they had to do-close it down. Maybe the patients will go to jail, maybe they will be sent to other mental health facilities. Either way the injustices and abuses there were brought to an end! We are in a similar boat here at the ol Fort. Maybe theirworkers got too fed up and did something about it......
