Well it seems that it's time for a mix up at the Fort. A lot of people are making team changes it seems. I would assume to be a little happier or find a way to keep working here. I hope everyone is happy in their new positions as it's getting confusing on who works where etc.
I liked the one from the DON on the new policy that people can only use their cell phones on their break. What break? Hmmm. Maybe someone should enlighten him.
We may also need to be getting the life preservers back up on the wall by what was in the most recent issue of the Fort in Short. Sounds like were having budget problems already with no fix in sight. How did this happen? Why do we constantly have our tails in a crack. There's got to be answers and it shouldn't mean that we take the brunt of the problem (like we did to get to July).
I think it would also help if they were honest with us and let us know what's going on. We're adults we can handle it.
One more thing. There are surveys being passed around for the union. The surveys are a chance to tell what you think needs a fix etc. It will give the union a direction in which to proceed. So please mail them in if you get one.

Two wonderful nurses are leaving the hospital to try something new. I think that changing units should be done more frequently to prevent burnout so perhaps they would not feel stuck.....but I really will miss those two kind souls departing the house....
This is written out of frustration that we identify goals worth achieving and are expected to do so but we are not given the means or resources. And at times the administration distracts from the efforts of the teams.
The only time I've seen the DON on the units is to drop off his students to the first staff he sees. This gives the impression that he is uncomfortable on the unit (rapore with his employees and clients), that he is here just to make money (double dipping), that he is using the fort and its resources to step up to something better( once he finishes school he's gone and will leave this place none the better). He pays lip service to client care while mis-using his postion to show his superiors what a wonderful boy he is(handing out knee jerk edicts to bandaide an image). But image is Dr. L's main concern as well. What was that comic routine of Billy Crystal, "It's not how you feel , it's how good you look." Where are the advocates of humane health care and safe working conditions. This is the stuff that justifies the formation of unions.
I will be leaving this hospital within the year (not retiring); it is time for me to move on. I will say that the D.O.N. has dealt with some issues related to some employees that have cost us a lot more money because they driven many people to leave this hospital. There are people at this hospital that are so entitled and so disrespectful to people that they are an embarrassment to the profession. They are usually those that because they do overtime have been allowed to “skate” by until are present D.O.N. came along. I do not agree with all his actions, but we do not really know what future awaits this hospital or pressure placed upon him in a subpar and underperforming hospital that he is now trying to make viable in the community again.
I really disliked this D.O.N. in the beginning, but after I saw how he is dealing with those that are usually the least talented or lack really any marketable skills in the real world yet think that they are above policy or professionalism I was pleasantly surprised. Regardless, the jobs were great here back in the day, but the job market has changed and the pay is not anything to keep any young (or older) staff around that has just a little ambition anymore. The good news for you staying around the Union is coming, but for those with just a few years here understand the job you are doing now will likely be the same that you will doing 20 years from now. Therefore, either you decide to further your education or seek marketable skills, create your own destiny or you leave your employment and financial future to others. In this day and age not being proactive in your destiny is not a wise decision regardless if there is a Union or not. Just a thought and no I don’t work for Administration just someone with a “foot out the door” looking forward to the next stage in my life.
"Either your a benchwarmer in your own game of life or you put on your jersey and get your butt in the game."
I understand the complaints of those that have many years in here and the fear in the change that is taking place and have an investment in this hospital’s future. I’m not being disrespectful to the problems that you are seeing, but talking to those that are not even close to retirement don’t waste your time. The direct care part of psychology is very stressful with very little monetary payoff unless you give them 20-30 years of your life. I mean honestly new Clinicians name a job that will pay you 15 bucks an hour (new hires only make a couple cents more)? I can name 20 off the top of my head and that is not counting how much health insurance is within the State system (knock a dollar or two off you pay per hour for that if you have a family). In addition, the psychiatric experience you will get here is very limited and very few skills will transfer to the private sector. Will you learn assessments, case management, receive in-depth psychiatric workshops, get real training from quality Social Workers, perform quality groups or will your skills that you learned at other facilities begin to erode or worst if this is the only positions you have ever held your psychiatric experience will be very limited? Yes they call you Clinicians (real world that is a Masters level position), but you are obviously treated like mental workers or aides. So use this company as a tool or “stepping stone” that serves you and your family’s future or get used and sacrificed for the hospital’s future. You see that they are beginning to bring in undereducated C.N.A. s to fill position that have no psychiatric experience and should not be in a psychiatric hospital unless doing a sitter duty. That says enough!
I find it interesing that there are employees that think our current DON is increasing professionalism throughout the hospital. He is bringing in nursing students by the buckets from nursing schools we have never heard of to prosper in his own financial situation. He sends out nasty memos that slap the entire nursing staff and then has meetings to explain that there is only one terrible team he wrote the memo about and they are not at the meeting.
It really surprises me that employees think this type of management raises professionalism. I hope the unions come in and give all of us the opportunity to paint the real picture.
